Department Summary
The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) is committed to ensuring that every undergraduate student at the University of Oregon has the support needed to thrive academically and graduate on time. UESS departments and programs include: Office of Academic Advising (OAA), PathwayOregon, TRIO Student Support Services, Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence (CMAE)*, the Accessible Education Center (AEC), Center for Undergraduate Research and Engagement (CURE), Office of Distinguished Scholarships (ODS), McNair Scholars Program, Academic Residential Communities (ARCs), First-Year Interest Groups (FIGs), Student Academy to Inspire Learning (SAIL), Tutoring and Academic Engagement Center (TAEC), and UESS Administration.
*NOTE: CMAE's budgetary home is the Division of Equity and Inclusion (DEI), programs are administered jointly by the DEI and UESS.
Position Summary
The Assistant Vice Provost for Advising (AVPA) reports directly to the Vice Provost and supervises and oversees UESS's direct student advising services, including: The Office of Academic Advising (OAA), PathwayOregon (POr), TRIO Student Support Services (SSS), and the Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence (CMAE). Varying in mission and scope, these units support more than 19,000 undergraduate students who represent diverse academic interests, abilities, and cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds.
As a key member of the student success leadership team, the Assistant Vice Provost for Advising (AVPA) will provide strategic campus-wide leadership to advance student success, including:
Advising leadership and expertise - The AVPA will represent the Vice Provost for UESS on various university committees positioning UESS as a leader in campus-wide student success work. The AVPA will champion best practices in academic advising, elevate awareness of the services offered by UESS, and highlight their measurable impact on student retention, and timely graduation outcomes. Key university partners include all schools/colleges advising leadership, Enrollment Management, and the Division of Student Life.
University-wide coordination - The AVPA will coordinate advising efforts within the division and across the university (with school/college advising leadership) on behalf of the VP of UESS. The AVPA will chair the Undergraduate Advising Council charged, in part, with creating a common first year advising experience, and adopting standard advising practices.
Direct effective services to students - The AVPA will be responsible for developing and implementing advising interventions, testing their efficacy in improving student retention and timely graduation, and using the results to make strategic programmatic decisions related to advising.
Assessment of advising - In alignment with Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) accreditation standards, the AVPA will work with the Director of Data and Assessment in UESS to ensure the systematic evaluation of the effectiveness of academic advising across the university to ensure that all students have knowledge of and access to appropriate programs and services that support their success.

This person must exhibit cultural humility and agility, with the ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Minimum Requirements
• Master's degree.
• Five years of professional experience in academic advising.
• Five years of experience managing large-scale advising and student support operations including supervision, fiscal oversight, and assessment.
Professional Competencies
• Understanding of issues facing diverse groups (e.g., low-socioeconomic, first-generation, varying abilities, underrepresented students of color, non-traditional, and underprepared individuals).
• Comprehensive expertise in student development and academic advising.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to write and speak on behalf of the Vice Provost.
• High-level organizational skills, including the ability to plan strategically and manage change in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, and time-sensitive environment.
• Ability to make important and high-profile decisions.
• Ability to work cooperatively and strategically in a team environment with a variety of levels of professionals.
• Ability to accomplish tasks with high quality results.
• Ability to recognize situations that warrant initiative and act decisively to resolve issues, problems, or situations.
• Ability to anticipate next steps and execute independently.
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar).
• Ability to produce professional correspondence, documents, data reports, and presentations.
• Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
• Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
• Proven track record of leading student success initiatives that resulted in improved retention, timely graduation, and equitable student outcomes.
• Experience developing and implementing new advising programs and policies at an institution of higher education.
• Experience working collaboratively across divisions and units to set and accomplish shared student success goals.
• Experience working at the University of Oregon, or similar institution of higher education.
