Job Summary:
The Veterinary Technician plays a crucial role in the healthcare team, assisting veterinarians in the diagnosis, treatment, and care of animals. As a skilled professional, the Veterinary Technician is responsible for performing clinical procedures, administering medications, managing patient care, and providing client education. The position requires knowledge of veterinary practices, compassion for animals, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Care & Assistance:
- Assist veterinarians during examinations, surgeries, and other medical procedures.
- Prepare animals for procedures, including monitoring vital signs and administering anesthesia.
- Provide nursing care, including administering medications (oral, injectable, topical), fluids, and treatments as prescribed.
- Assist in collecting and processing lab samples (blood, urine, feces, etc.) for diagnostics.
- Monitor patients post-surgery or during recovery, ensuring comfort and safety.
- Diagnostic and Laboratory Support:
- Perform diagnostic tests, including blood work, urinalysis, and other lab procedures.
- Operate and maintain medical equipment such as X-ray machines, ultrasound, and laboratory analyzers.
- Interpret and analyze laboratory results under the supervision of a veterinarian.
- Maintain patient records with accurate medical histories, test results, and treatment protocols.
- Client Communication and Education:
- Communicate with pet owners regarding their animal’s health, treatment options, and preventive care.
- Provide clients with instructions for at-home care, including administering medications and managing post-operative recovery.
- Educate clients on the importance of vaccinations, parasite prevention, nutrition, and general wellness care.
- Offer emotional support to pet owners during difficult situations, such as end-of-life decisions or emergencies.
- Surgical Assistance:
- Assist in surgical procedures, including preparing the surgical area, sterilizing instruments, and monitoring anesthesia.
- Maintain sterile environments and adhere to strict protocols for infection control.
- Observe animals under anesthesia, ensuring their vital signs remain stable, and adjust anesthesia as directed by the veterinarian.
- Prepare post-operative care instructions and assist in patient recovery.
- Emergency and Critical Care:
- Provide emergency care in critical situations, including CPR, trauma care, and stabilization of injured animals.
- Assist with diagnostic tests and provide immediate support for life-threatening conditions (e.g., shock, poisoning, seizures).
- Pharmacy and Medication Management:
- Dispense medications and ensure they are administered accurately as prescribed by the veterinarian.
- Maintain medication inventory, ensuring stock levels are adequate and medications are stored according to regulatory standards.
- Educate clients about medications, including proper administration and potential side effects.
- Administrative and Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate medical records for each animal, including detailed notes on treatments, surgeries, and progress.
- Assist with scheduling appointments, managing medical billing, and processing insurance claims.
- Ensure patient charts and records are up-to-date, organized, and comply with privacy and legal requirements.
- Facility Maintenance and Cleanliness:
- Ensure that the veterinary clinic’s equipment, examination rooms, and surgical suites are clean, sterilized, and well-maintained.
- Assist in restocking medical supplies and ensuring all areas of the clinic are organized and sanitary.
- Team Support and Collaboration:
- Work effectively as part of a veterinary team, collaborating with veterinarians, veterinary assistants, and other staff members.
- Support other team members with difficult cases, complex treatments, or surgeries.
Required Qualifications:
- Education:
- Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited institution.
- Certification: Successful completion of the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) or equivalent, where applicable. Certification or licensure requirements vary by region.
- Experience:
- Previous experience in a veterinary clinic, hospital, or animal care facility is preferred. Entry-level candidates may be considered if they have completed veterinary technician training.
- Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of veterinary procedures, including anesthesia, surgical assistance, diagnostics, and patient care.
- Familiarity with veterinary software for record-keeping and scheduling.
- Knowledge of animal physiology, pharmacology, and basic veterinary medical terminology.
- Ability to handle animals safely and humanely, even in stressful or emergency situations.
