About the Role The Foundation Giving Officer is a vital member of the Development team and the 3-person Institutional Giving team, comprised of the Director of Strategic Initiatives & Institutional Giving, Corporate Giving Officer, and Foundation Giving Officer. This role will support the organization's efforts to raise approximately $1.5 million annually from institutional funders, with a focus on foundation and government giving, contributing $350,000 annually. This full-time position will be the primary grant writer for the organization, responsible for holding a portfolio of foundation funders, leading the writing and coordination of grant proposals and reports, conducting prospect research, and creating content and language to support the Development Team.
The Foundation Giving Officer partners closely with colleagues across the organization to ensure timely and compelling grant submissions that communicate the impact of our work to support animals and their guardians. The ideal candidate is a strong written and verbal communicator, with exceptional organizational skills. A personal commitment to and passion for animals and animal welfare is essential.
Responsibilities Grant Writing & Reporting
- Manages a tiered portfolio of foundation and government donors and all aspects of foundation giving, including stewardship, maintaining and engaging in timely communication on the status of foundation proposals, reports, and records.
- Write persuasive, mission-aligned grant proposals, letters of inquiry, reports, and funder correspondence that clearly articulate the SF SPCA programs, impact, and funding needs.
- Collaborate with program and finance teams to gather data, narratives, and budget information for timely, accurate submissions.
- Maintain and regularly update a library of program descriptions, organizational materials, and impact metrics to streamline grant development.
Prospect Research & Funder Stewardship
- Conduct ongoing prospect research to identify and evaluate new institutional funding opportunities, aligning with the SF SPCA's strategic priorities.
- Track funder interests, timelines, and relationship histories using Raiser's Edge and other tracking tools.
- Prepare background materials and briefings for meetings with funders, board members, and senior leadership.
- Manage funder stewardship by drafting impact updates, thank-you letters, and tailored donor communications.
Administrative Coordination
- Manage the grants calendar, coordinating internal deadlines for proposals and reports.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in Raiser's Edge, including proposal and report submissions, deadlines, and activity tracking.
- Organize and maintain shared institutional giving files, ensuring clarity, consistency, and accessibility.
- Prepare materials for board and leadership meetings related to institutional funding.
- Provide cross-functional support during high-volume periods or organizational events.
- Hybrid role with approximately 2-3 days in office
- Occasional weekend and/or evening work may be required to meet deadlines or support special events
Requirements
- High school diploma required; college degree preferred.
- 4 years of experience in development, with experience writing grants or donor communications in a nonprofit setting.
- Strong written communication skills, with a clear and engaging writing style.
- Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and coordinate across teams.
- Collaborative and proactive team member who takes initiative and values feedback.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Raiser's Edge or similar CRM is a plus.
- A personal commitment to animal welfare and the mission of the SF SPCA.
Salary and Benefits: The starting salary for this position depends on the length and breadth of experience. The expected range is $85,000 - 95,000 per year.
