Job Responsibilities Position Overview The mission of the South Carolina State Election Commission (SEC) is to ensure every eligible citizen has the opportunity to register to vote and participate in fair and impartial elections, with the assurance that every vote will count. The External Affairs Coordinator serves as the primary manager of the agency's website, scVOTES.gov, ensuring that the site remains accurate, timely, accessible, and user-friendly. In addition to leading website content management, the Coordinator supports the agency's broader communications efforts by responding to public inquiries, assisting with media relations, and contributing to public outreach initiatives.
Reporting to the Director of External Affairs, the ideal candidate will be creative, detail-oriented, and able to work effectively in a mission-driven, results-focused, team-oriented environment. This role requires strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent organizational abilities, sound judgment, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities under pressure. The Coordinator must also handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
• Manage the agency's website, scVOTES.gov, ensuring content is accurate, timely, accessible, and presented in an organized and visually engaging manner.
• Assist the Director of External Affairs with media and public relations by drafting, editing, and proofreading press releases, speeches, presentations, talking points, reports, and other communications.
• Support the planning, coordination, and promotion of agency programs and initiatives through traditional, digital, and visual media channels.
• Assist with public outreach programs, workshops, and events for diverse audiences through in-person engagement and written and verbal communications.
• Monitor public inquiries (phone, email, online forms) and coordinate timely, accurate responses in collaboration with agency staff.
Minimum and Additional Requirements - Bachelor's degree in journalism, marketing, mass communications, management, English, or a related field and two years of professional experience in communications, public affairs, or a related area.
- Experience managing website content in a content management system (such as WordPress, Drupal, or SharePoint).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated writing, editing, and analytical abilities.
- Strong organizational skills, commitment to accuracy, and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to take initiative, work collaboratively, adapt to shifting priorities, and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Ability to research, synthesize, and communicate complex information clearly.
- Availability to work after hours, including election nights and occasional weekends, and to travel as needed.
Preferred Qualifications - Working knowledge of web design principles, accessibility standards, and user experience best practices.
- Experience managing or contributing to large, public-facing websites for government agencies, nonprofits, or mission-driven organizations.
- Experience using website analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics) to evaluate performance and guide improvements.
- Experience with search engine optimization (SEO) and writing/editing for online audiences.
- Experience supporting media relations, including drafting press releases, preparing talking points, and coordinating responses to media inquiries.
- Knowledge of South Carolina state government functions and processes.
