Medical Laboratory Scientist Job Details
- Location: Upper Marlboro, Maryland 20774 (Washington, D.C. metro area)
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Start Date: January 5, 2026
- End Date: April 6, 2026
- Shift: 5x8-hour day shifts (07:30 - 16:00); rotating day/evening shifts may be required
- Hours per Week: 40
- Estimated Weekly Salary: $1,640 - $1,770 per week
- Employment Type: Travel, On-Site
- Weekend/Holiday: Every other weekend and holidays as scheduled
- Orientation: 24 hours
Medical Laboratory Scientist Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of recent experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Lab Tech
- Active Maryland or Compact State medical laboratory license required
- ASCP certification required (ASCP-MLS and BLS preferred)
- Proficient in laboratory instruments, procedures, and independent lab work
- Experience with Epic charting system preferred
- Ability to work with all patient age groups: neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, geriatrics
- Flu vaccine required (no exemptions)
- Comfortable floating within the laboratory department as needed
- Two professional references required (one supervisor/manager and one charge RN acceptable)
- Permanent residence must be at least 50 miles from the facility
Medical Laboratory Scientist Responsibilities
- Independently perform laboratory tests and procedures including blood banking, specimen collection, microbiology cultures, molecular extractions, PCR testing, and quality assurance/control
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation
- Report and interpret test results accurately for diverse patient populations
- Ensure proper labeling, storage, and disposal of laboratory specimens
- Participate in laboratory quality assurance and control activities
- Float within the department and adapt to changing priorities
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to support patient care
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements
