Job Description
American Traveler seeks an experienced RN for a Pediatric ICU (PICU) position, requiring advanced pediatric critical care skills and a SD or compact RN license.
Responsibilities
- Work in a combined Pediatric and Pediatric ICU unit with 15 general pediatric beds and 5 PICU beds
- Care for patients from birth to 18 years old, with occasional adult overflow for stable medical and post-surgical cases
- Typical patients include those with respiratory illnesses, diabetes, septicemia, hyperbilirubinemia, trauma, abuse/neglect, mental health, and a variety of surgeries
- PICU patients include those with critical needs such as respiratory insufficiency, organ dysfunction, trauma, neurology, and toxic exposures
- Patient ratios: 1:5 in General Pediatrics and 1:1–2 in PICU
- Floating required to NICU (feeder/growers, 1:3 ratio) and General Pediatrics (up to 1:5 ratio)
- 12-hour variable shifts with every other weekend rotation and possible low census/on-call
- All holidays may be scheduled; time off must be pre-approved
- Uses EPIC EMR system and Omnicell equipment
- Responsibilities include physical assessments, medication administration, and patient/family education
- RNs and nurse aides draw their own labs and start IVs, with ultrasound available for difficult IVs
- Support team includes CNA, charge nurse, resource nurse, RT, hospitalist, pediatric pharmacy, case management, and social work
- One day of facility orientation and two days of unit orientation with a preceptor provided
- Required to wear navy scrubs

Requirements
- Active SD or compact RN license required
- Minimum 1.5 years PICU RN experience required; first-time travelers must have at least 2 years of experience
- Current BLS, PALS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Completion of a board-approved nursing education program
- Proficiency with EPIC charting system
- Ability to titrate drips and care for mechanically ventilated patients
- Physical skills to assess, evaluate, and educate patients ranging from infants to adults
- 100-mile radius rule applies; no local travelers permitted
