Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PACU position in an acute care setting requiring a current CA RN license and strong PACU or ICU background.
Responsibilities
- Position is in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) of an acute care hospital
- Unit includes 13 phase 1 beds and 17 phase 2 beds, with travelers expected to cover both phases
- Patient ratios are 1:2 in phase 1 and 1:4 in phase 2
- Common cases include laparoscopic cholecystectomy, bariatric, debridements, orthopedic, and neuro procedures
- Work schedule is 10-hour day shifts with varied start times between 0600-0900
- On-call required: 1 weeknight per week and 24-36 hours of weekend call each month
- One holiday per year required for call coverage
- 30-minute response time expected for call shifts
- Floating to ACU, pre-op, and phase 2 is required; PACU RNs also assist with pre-op and discharge as needed
- Cerner is used for charting and prior experience is preferred
- Respiratory therapists manage vents and other RT equipment on the unit
- Care for post-anesthesia patients and occasionally recover ICU patients
- RNs are responsible for pre-op preparation, monitoring post-op patients, and managing discharges as needed
- Charge nurse may carry a partial patient assignment
- One transporter is available for support on the unit
- Specific PACU and ACU orientation is provided
- Hospital provides required scrubs for this assignment
- Previous direct employment with the associated health system within the past year disqualifies candidates
- First-time travelers will be considered for this position
Requirements
- Active CA RN license required at the time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
- Minimum of 2 years recent PACU or ICU nursing experience required
- Current certifications required: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Ability to read cardiac monitoring strips is required
- Two professional references: one supervisor from the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from the last 3 years
- Copy of driver's license is required
- Must pass facility testing on dysrhythmia interpretation and sterile technique prior to start
