Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg unit night shift role requiring acute care background and titration of drips.
Responsibilities
- Position is based in an acute care hospital on the Med Surg 8N unit
- 27-bed unit with nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:4-5 during day/evening shifts and 1:6 for night shifts, occasionally 1:7 if short staffed
- Patient population includes oncology/hematology, general medical, GI bleed, PE/DVT, sepsis, CHF, COPD, pneumonia, and failure to thrive among others
- Common procedures include titration of drips such as insulin, heparin, cardizem, nitro, amiodarone, octreotide, and blood transfusions
- Centralized telemetry techs monitor and read strips; RNs are not responsible for reading telemetry strips but should be tele-aware
- RT available 24/7 overseeing equipment such as CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow O2
- Work schedule consists of 12-hour night shifts (1900-0730) with every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) and holiday rotation
- Floating required to other med-surg units; may float outside med-surg as observer or helping hands, typically in 4-hour increments
- Cerner EMR currently in use with transition to Epic anticipated
- Travelers are typically the first to float within the med-surg units
- Charge nurse and house supervisor present on all shifts; travelers may be asked to take charge if comfortable, especially on nights
- Patient care is supported by nurse aides with ratios of 1:7-9 days/evenings and 1:14 at night
- Orientation includes 1 day of compliance/computer-based training and one 12-hour floor shift
- Any color scrubs permitted except those with other health system logos
- Must clock in and out at the facility daily
- Local candidates (within 80 miles) accepted at reduced rates
Requirements
- Active WI or compact RN license required by start date
- Current BLS (AHA) certification required
- Minimum of 1 year recent acute care RN experience required
- Experience with complex medical and surgical patients required
- Comfort and experience in titrating drips is necessary
- Must supply two professional references: one from a supervisor, one from a peer or supervisor
- Returning employees must have separated for at least 6 months prior to consideration
