Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position, requiring 18 months of MedSurg or ICU experience and competency with Cerner or Epic.
Responsibilities
- Work in a large hospital setting as part of the Med/Surg Float Pool
- Assigned to home unit on first day, with responsibilities across multiple Med/Surg, surgical, trauma, neuro, ortho, urology, oncology, and clinical decision units
- Patient populations include trauma, general surgery, neuro, oncology, orthopedics, spine, urology, and general Med/Surg
- Patient ratios typically range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit
- Specialized procedures include wound care, chest tubes, NGT/PEG, IV skills, trach care, drains, foleys, chemo admin (if certified), and more
- Telemetry monitoring performed by tele techs; RNs must interpret and confirm tele strips every 4 hours
- EMR is Cerner (preferred), with experience in Cerner or Epic required
- Uses Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell for medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
- Night shift position (7:00pm start), 12-hour shifts in a 4-week cycle schedule, every other weekend or at least 4 weekend days per month
- No on-call requirement
- Holiday coverage required for one major and one minor holiday per facility policy
- Floating required between similar units per hospital guidelines
- Daily responsibilities include patient assessment, prioritization, wound care, medication administration, escalation of care, and documentation
- Support staff includes CNAs, phlebotomists, charge nurse (rarely takes assignment), IV/VAT Team, and hospitalists
- Orientation for new or returning travelers (after one year) includes 24 hours classroom time and 24 hours unit orientation
- First-time travelers are accepted if all other requirements are met
- Required to wear any color scrubs
- Holiday coverage and a strict policy on time-off blackout dates apply
- Parking is provided in the hospital parking deck (levels 2-4)
Requirements
- Current AL or compact RN license is required
- Minimum of 18 months' recent Med/Surg and/or ICU experience is required
- Experience with Cerner or Epic EMR is required; Cerner experience is required if ICU only background
- BLS and NIHSS certifications are required
- At least 1 year of trauma/surgical nursing experience for certain units
- Strong skills in IV initiation, blood draws from central lines, wound and chest tube care, trach and PEG care, medication administration, restraints, and telemetry interpretation
- No local candidates within a 60-mile radius
- Former staff must have a 6-month gap from last shift before returning as a traveler
