Job Summary: The Registered Nurse – Pediatric ICU Preceptor will provide direct patient care in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and serve as a mentor and educator for new nursing staff. The Preceptor is responsible for guiding, training, and supporting new RNs through their orientation period, ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards within the unit.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide high-quality nursing care to critically ill pediatric patients in the ICU.
- Serve as a preceptor and resource for new RNs during their onboarding and orientation process.
- Educate and demonstrate best practices in clinical procedures and patient care.
- Supervise and evaluate new nurses’ performance and provide constructive feedback.
- Collaborate with the Nurse Education Department and unit leadership to ensure effective clinical training.
- Administer medications, perform IV insertions, and conduct phlebotomy as needed.
- Monitor and assess patient conditions, document care accurately, and communicate changes to the healthcare team.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, standards of care, and regulatory requirements.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of Maternal and Child experience.
- Minimum 2 years of IV insertion and Phlebotomy experience.
- Minimum 2 years of Conscious Sedation experience.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Experience in a pediatric critical care environment.
- Prior preceptorship or nurse educator experience.
Education Requirements:
- Required: Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ASN/ADN) from an accredited nursing program.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN).
Certifications & Licensure:
- Required:
- Valid New York State RN License.
- Primary Source Verification of license and registration with the NYS Department of Education (NYSED).
- AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
