Description The Assistant Fire Marshal is a senior leadership position responsible for supporting and advancing the mission of the Fire Prevention Division. Working under the direction of the Fire Marshal, this role provides oversight and coordination of fire prevention, code enforcement, investigations, inspections, and public education programs to ensure the safety of the community. The Assistant Fire Marshal serves as the Fire Marshal's designee in their absence and plays a key role in developing and implementing fire safety policies, procedures, and initiatives across the jurisdiction. This position requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to build effective working relationships with staff, partner agencies, and the public.
**Salary will be determined depending on qualifications of candidates who exceed the minimum requirements as outlined within the job description.

Essential Functions Note : These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position. Assists the Fire Marshal in planning, directing, and managing the operations of the Fire Prevention Division.
Provides leadership, supervision, and mentoring to fire prevention staff, ensuring effective performance and professional development.
Conducts and oversees fire inspections, code enforcement activities, and investigations to ensure compliance with the Florida Fire Prevention Code, local ordinances, and applicable state statutes.
Coordinates and participates in fire cause and origin investigations, preparing detailed reports and, when necessary, testifying in legal proceedings.
Develops, reviews, and enforces fire safety policies, procedures, and standards to improve community risk reduction and public safety.
Assists in the development and administration of the division's budget, staffing plans, and resource allocation.
Leads and supports public education and outreach programs to promote fire safety awareness and prevention within the community.
Reviews construction plans, permits, and fire protection system designs for compliance with fire codes and standards.
Acts as the Fire Marshal in their absence, including representing the division in meetings, hearings, and interagency collaborations.
Provides expert guidance to county leadership, partner agencies, businesses, and residents on fire and life safety matters.
Responds to fire and emergency scenes as needed to support investigations, provide technical expertise, and assist in incident command functions.
Maintains accurate records, prepares reports, and ensures proper documentation of enforcement actions and division activities.
Stays current with changes in laws, codes, and industry best practices; recommends and implements updates to policies and procedures.
Builds and maintains effective relationships with community members, contractors, developers, and government agencies to support fire prevention goals.
Conducts and/or oversees damage assessments following incidents or disasters, including coordinating the Fire Prevention Division's role in damage assessment for the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
Additional Duties : Performs other related work as required.
In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.
Minimum Qualifications Associate's or bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, or related field (Bachelor's preferred).
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in fire prevention, inspection, or investigation, including supervisory responsibilities.
Experience in code enforcement, plan review, or fire investigations is highly desirable.
Must possess:
- State of Florida Fire Safety Inspector I, in accordance with Florida Statute 633.
- Fire Inspector II certification (NFPA or equivalent)
A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Additional Certifications
Fire Investigator certification (e.g., IAAI-CFI or NAFI-CFEI)
Fire Officer I or II certification preferred
Additional Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
Must maintain a high level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct in all aspects of work.
Required to obtain and maintain all licenses, certifications, and continuing education as mandated by state law, local ordinance, or departmental policy.
Strong knowledge of applicable fire codes (e.g., NFPA, ICC), fire protection systems, and construction practices.
Demonstrated leadership, supervisory ability, and project/investigation management skills.
Effective written, verbal, and public speaking communication skills with competency in community engagement.
Ability to maintain composure and sound judgment in high-pressure situations.
Proficiency with inspection, reporting, and database software.
Ability to respond to emergencies, special assignments, and off-hour incidents, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Essential personnel; subject to recall during emergencies, disasters, or EOC activation.

Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and within a structured chain of command, demonstrating leadership, discretion, and conflict-resolution skills.

Paid Time Off: New full-time employees accrue 20 days per year of Paid Time Off (16 days for 24-hour shift personnel). New part-time employees accrue 83 hours per year of Paid Time Off. Accrual rates increase with service time.
