Job Description
American Traveler is hiring an RN for a Pediatric Oncology/Hematology unit requiring recent pediatric oncology experience, NC or compact RN license, and BLS/PALS certification.
Responsibilities
- Work in a 24-bed Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant unit at a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center
- Patient population includes pediatric through adult patients with childhood cancer, hematologic conditions, and highly acute bone marrow transplant cases
- Nurses provide care in both general oncology/hematology and positive pressure bone marrow transplant environments
- Common diagnoses include solid tumor cancers, leukemia, sickle cell disease, aplastic anemia, and behavioral health cases
- RN-to-patient ratio is 1:3 in Hem/Onc, 1:1-2 in BMT depending on acuity, and 1:3-4 for observation/off-service
- Schedule includes day (0645-1915) and night (1845-0715) 12-hour shifts, every other weekend, and holiday coverage (75%)
- EPIC EMR, Omnicell for med dispensing, and Alaris IV pumps are used; telemetry monitoring is required at the bedside
- Floating may be required to general pediatric med units but not to main ER, PICU, or NICU
- Nurses provide specialized care to a highly acute, immunocompromised patient population including end-of-life and transplant cases
- Care for both hematology/oncology and BMT patients; comfort with behavioral health pediatric cases expected
- Support team includes free-floating charge RN, unit educator, task RN, unit secretary, rounding psych tech, onsite APP during the day, provider on call overnight, IV/VAT team, and 24/7 respiratory therapy
- First-time travelers accepted if they are experienced BMT RNs
- Department culture prioritizes teamwork and initiative
- Two days departmental orientation provided in addition to facility orientation
- Scrub color is navy blue
- Unit is equipped with cameras; security present 24/7; psych tech available for escalation
- Free parking provided
Requirements
- Current NC or compact state RN license
- Minimum 2 years of pediatric RN experience with strong oncology/hematology experience within the last year
- Prior bone marrow transplant (BMT) experience highly preferred
- Current BLS and PALS certifications
- APHON provider card required
- Experience in port access, chemotherapy administration, blood product transfusion, cardiac rhythm interpretation, central line care, PCA pumps, and Heparin gtts required
- Must be comfortable with blood cultures and handling highly acute, immunosuppressed patients
- Permanent address must be at least 50 miles from the facility
