Emergency Department Registered Nurse Position Overview
- ER D/N/W/Holiday rotation
- Schedule: 7a-7pm/7pm-7am
- Apply knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high quality compassionate care to patients and families
- Assess patient need, identify urgent or emergent care priority, and collaboratively provide direct care
- Apply appropriate interventions and evaluate patient progress
- Demonstrate skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions appropriate to manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations
- Utilize principles of relationship based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain/discomfort and safety
- Assess physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems as appropriate
Key Responsibilities
- Connect with patient and family during triage
- Identify initial management of patients of all age groups and assign priority of care in accordance with Triage Standards as outlined in the ESI training
- Establish rapport with patients and families, address comfort needs, listen carefully, assess nonverbal communication, and provide frequent updates
- Convey and gather information concisely and accurately
- Conduct primary assessment of critical need, detect and document any major deviation from norm for all age groups within acceptable time frames
- Correctly identify necessary steps/interventions required
- Use direct observation, patient/family interview, EMS report, and data to conduct secondary assessment
- Identify contributing factors, health history, events, or activities preceding the emergent health event
- Assess psychosocial needs of each individual (including family dynamics), and document and report any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse in all age groups
- Reassess the patient to identify response to treatment and/or changes in condition and respond appropriately
- Encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to accomplish the best possible patient outcome
- Teach others as appropriate and delegate tasks and interventions consistent with the individual's education, training, and scope of practice
- Understand personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies
- Prepare patient, parent, or family for diagnostic procedures and treatments
- Make appropriate referrals for post-emergency care
- Teach the patient what is needed to continue care/healing at home
- Assess patient/family learning styles and structure sessions to maximize understanding
- Ask questions to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instruction
- Seek to understand what is most important to the patient/family, acknowledging that the patient and family are the central focus of all care and services
- Embrace the importance of creating a Healing Environment as a key element of professional nursing practice
- Keep patient and significant others informed of process of care, anticipate patient/family needs (including notification of family/support system for the patient)
- Maintain awareness of the patient's condition/situation throughout the ER visit
- Update patient communication boards throughout the ED stay
Required Certifications
- BLS, ACLS, Stroke Certification (AHA or RQI only)
- BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS
- NYS RN Licensure
Required Experience
- One-year acute hospital experience as a registered professional nurse
- 2 years experience in the ED
