Required Qualifications
- NYS RN Licensure Required
- BLS Certification
- ACLS Certification
- One (1) Year Experience serving in Med/Surg Environment as a Registered Nurse
Position Overview
- The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high quality compassionate care to patients and families
- The RN assesses patient need, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates the care delivery throughout the patient's episode
- The Med/Surg RN develops specialized skill in the area of cardiac care including telemetry monitoring
- The RN is accountable for patient family education to assist the patient and family in understanding self care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing
- He/She promotes comfort and provides emotional support in a healing environment
Key Responsibilities Applies nursing knowledge and skill in the delivery of care
- Applies nursing knowledge and skill in delivery of care by assessing patient/family needs through active listening, social perceptiveness (being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do), and analyzing data/information obtained through direct observation and assessment, technology, or health team communication
- Creates a developmentally and age appropriate, culturally relevant, individualized plan of care to address the nature and scope of the health problems identified
- In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and health care team members, sets goals and monitors the patient's progress
- The RN adjusts the plan based on patient response or change in condition/reprioritization of needs
Quality and Professional Development
- Promotes, advocates for and protects the health, safety and rights of the patient
- Systematically evaluates quality and effectiveness of Nursing Practice, uses the results of Quality Improvement activities to initiate changes in individual nursing practice and to influence care delivery
- Engages in self-evaluation of practice, identifying strengths and areas in which professional development would be beneficial and takes accountability to increase knowledge and enhance skill
- Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
- Demonstrates skill in application of nursing interventions including medication administration
Patient/Family Education
- Motivates the patient/family by teaching them what is needed to continue care and healing at home
- Assesses the patient/family learning styles and structures the sessions to maximize understanding
- Seeks "teachable" moments during the care delivery process to emphasize pertinent information
- Asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in the self care process
- Provides tools and information to assist the patient family after discharge
- Documents the education provided and the patient/family response to the education
Team Collaboration and Leadership
- Encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to promote members of the team working together to accomplish the best possible patient outcome
- Teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with the individual's education, training, and scope of practice
- Complies with infection prevention strategies and maintains competencies required to care for the specific population in the area assigned
- Reports potential safety risks and inappropriate/questionable practices
- Promotes leadership awareness and fosters positive change
- Conducts rounds per protocol and uses tools and equipment needed to keep the patient/family informed, engaged, and safe
