Job Responsibilities The Associate Vice President/Dean of Students (AVP/Dean) is a visionary leader who drives the direction, innovation and impact of the Community Life neighborhood within the Division of Student Affairs Division. As second-in-command and trusted advisor to the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA), the AVP/Dean plays a key role on the Student Affairs Executive Team-shaping strategy, inspiring collaboration and championing an exceptional student experience.
Oversight and Supervision of Community Life Staff, Offices and Programs - Provides visionary oversight and administrative direction for Community Life, including the Dean of Student's Office, the Office of Residence Life, the Office of Accessibility, and New Student & Family Programs.
- Hires, supervises, trains, develops and evaluates staff, including the Assistant Dean/Director of Residence Life, Assistant Dean of Students (Care), Director of Student Conduct, Director of the Office of Accessibility and an Administrative Assistant. Guides staff in aligning unit-level priorities, goals and learning outcomes with university and divisional strategic directions and outcomes.
- Forecasts and requests funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies and oversees budget and resource management.
Student Policies, Risk Management and Compliance - Facilitates the development of university policies and procedures related to students, ensures compliance and coordinates dissemination to the campus community.
- Oversees maintenance of all student records.
- Interprets and administers federal, state and local regulations and policies; provides direction and support to meet and maintain compliance and accreditation standards; and serves as a central resource for faculty and staff.
- Oversees the resolution process for non-academic complaints and discrimination complaints against students.
- Collaborates with the Student Affairs Executive Leadership Team to coordinate divisional risk management and emergency response protocols.
- Responds to emergency/crisis situations.
- Serves as a primary Division of Student Affairs contact for students and their families, as a member of the university Emergency Management Operations Group, and as back-up to the VPSA on the Emergency Management Executive Leadership Team.
- Advises faculty and staff on appropriate courses of action regarding student safety.
- Oversees the team that addresses students of concern and students who pose a behavioral threat to the campus community; maintains a caseload of students who may pose a threat; and collaborates with a variety of stakeholders to formulate and execute expedited interventions, referrals and follow-up services.
- Establishes and maintains partnerships with Academic Affairs, other university units and external groups, to increase comprehensive support of student persistence, retention and success.
Divisional Leadership - Serves as a member of the Student Affairs Executive Leadership Team, as second in command for the Division of Student Affairs, and on behalf of the VPSA, as requested.
- Advises the Student Government Association (SGA).
- Provides leadership to the Homecoming Steering Committee.
- Provides significant campus visibility during evenings and weekends and supports special events, such as Orientation, Family Day, Convocation, Commencement, etc.
Deputy Title IX Coordination - Serves as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator, supporting the Title IX Coordinator in addressing student-related reports of sexual misconduct and playing a key role on the Title IX response team.
- Collaborates with the Title IX Coordinator to implement interim measures for complainants and respondents, ensuring timely and appropriate support.
- Maintains accurate, thorough and consistent documentation of all Title IX-related actions involving the Dean's Office.
Student Conduct & Academic Integrity Process - Provides strategic leadership for student conduct and academic integrity.
- Oversees the development, regular review and equitable enforcement of the Code of Student Conduct, ensuring alignment with institutional values and legal compliance.
- In partnership with Academic Affairs, leads efforts to establish and uphold academic integrity policies and guidelines, offering campus-wide education and collaborating with faculty to prevent and address academic misconduct.
- Supports and supervises the Director of Student Conduct; serves as a Senior Hearing Officer for high-level conduct cases, coordinates appeals, and reviews requests for re-admittance from students dismissed for policy violations.
Minimum and Additional Requirements - Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration or related field.
- At least seven years of progressive leadership experience in higher education or student affairs and proven ability to manage multiple departments/services, including residence life and housing.
- Demonstrated commitment to student success and retention, with hands-on experience managing student conduct and Title IX compliance, supporting students of concern and navigating challenges that may impede academic progress.
- Experience managing ADA/disability regulations, threat assessment protocols, risk management and regulatory compliance.
- Proficiency with Maxient or similar case management system.
- Budgeting experience in a similarly complex organizational structure.
- Deep understanding of current Community Standards and the ability to foster a campus culture rooted in safety, inclusion, accountability and mutual respect and provide strategic oversight of the Code of Student Conduct, including academic integrity, to ensure equitable enforcement and alignment with institutional values.
- Working knowledge of ADA/disability regulations, threat assessment protocols, risk management and regulatory compliance and the ability to interpret and apply complex policies and legal guidelines.
- Expert knowledge of Title IX compliance, sexual misconduct prevention and student development theory and the ability to address emerging student needs and influence university policy.
- Strong grasp of assessment and evaluation methods-particularly for program development, accreditation, and strategic resource allocation-and working knowledge of data analysis techniques.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to present complex information clearly and effectively to a wide range of stakeholders.
- Proven ability to build a high-performance team and provide leadership through training, mentoring, and formal and informal feedback.
- Exceptional organization skills and the ability to lead multiple concurrent projects.
- Ability to build relationships across departments and collaborate successfully with internal and external partners.
- Demonstrated cultural competence, emotional intelligence and a steadfast commitment to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications - At least 10 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education or student affairs.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and web-based software.
- Experience advising student government or similar group.
Additional Comments Travel/Overtime Requirements: Occasional evening and weekend hours to manage incidents and/or campus programs.
Annual Salary/Hiring Range: $124,000; actual salary depends on qualifications.
