The salary range above represents this position's earning potential. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $ 62,328 per year to $74,991 per year, based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Montgomery County's Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) helps protect Montgomery County consumers by investigating and resolving consumer complaints, licensing and registering businesses and engaging in consumer education and outreach. Our office was established in 1971, and we are proud to have earned national recognition. OCP is responsible for enforcing consumer protection laws (Chapter 11 of the County Code), which prohibit unfair and deceptive business acts to ensure a fair marketplace for consumers and businesses.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Administrative Specialist I is a discreet, highly organized professional who can support a fast-moving Director and confidently interface with executive leadership and elected officials. You will primarily provide professional staff support across multiple functional areas-maintaining accurate records, conducting targeted research and policy analyses, and drafting, proofreading, and formatting internal and inter-agency correspondence according to departmental standards. You will oversee the coordination of meetings and events, which includes managing executive calendars, establishing agendas, reserving necessary resources, documenting minutes, and tracking actionable follow-up items. This role requires collaboration with colleagues across County departments and external agencies to ensure streamlined communication and comprehensive documentation.
You will play a crucial role in supporting senior management with project tracking and analysis. This involves updating milestone logs, identifying potential delays, and creating concise summaries to help inform team decisions. You will apply the policies and procedures of Montgomery County to your daily tasks, escalate complex issues when necessary, and serve as a welcoming first point of contact for staff and the public. Your responsibilities include providing prompt and courteous service while maintaining strict confidentiality and professionalism.
What You'll Be Doing Major Responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:

- Act as liaison with executive leadership, Council/legislative offices, and partner agencies; coordinate timely, accurate responses to inquiries from elected officials and their staff.
- Provide workforce leadership for administrative operations: assign and track tasks, monitor shared inboxes, ensure reception/mail/phone coverage, and orient/coach administrative staff on procedures and quality standards.
- Review and improve processes: document SOPs, map workflows, identify bottlenecks, and recommend practical changes; maintain simple metrics (e.g., response and processing times) and status logs.
- Draft/edit clear correspondence, memos, and public notices related to consumer-protection activities; ensure consistency, accessibility, and records retention compliance.
- Handle records, intake routing, and follow-ups; receive, investigate, and resolve or refer public inquiries appropriately.
- Assist with fiscal administration, limited to receiving and processing payments in accordance with established procedures and internal controls.
- Use Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, SharePoint/OneDrive; Power Automate/PowerApps as needed) to standardize templates and streamline routine tasks.
Minimum Qualifications Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree.
Experience: One (1) year of professional administrative experience supporting a Director, agency head, elected official, or comparable executive in a consumer-protection or related regulatory program.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Physical Demands: The work requires ordinary physical effort including: sitting, using microcomputer equipment, walking, standing, bending, and reaching for or carrying light items associated with working in an office environment. Work does not result in noticeable fatigue.
Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences All Applicants will be reviewed by the Office of Human Resources (OHR) for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated "Qualified," placed on the Referred List, and may be considered for an interview.
Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:
- Experience with or working knowledge of consumer-protection laws and programs, with applied administrative/program support experience.
- Experience supporting executives and elected officials; adept with briefings, complex calendars, and sensitive communications.
- Demonstrated process review and improvement using workflows, SOPs, and KPIs to drive results.
- Workforce leadership - coordinating administrative workflows and coverage.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365; SharePoint and basic automation preferred.
