Registered Nurse – ER
Facility: University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center
Location: 5 Garrett Ave, La Plata, MD 20646
Start Date: September 15, 2025 (or ASAP)
Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights – 3x12-Hour (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Schedule: Every other weekend (EOW), holidays as they fall
Unit: Emergency Room – 3210-10316
Beds: 47
Daily Census: ~130
Patient Ratio: 1:4
Position Overview:
Fast-paced, high-volume ER treating all ages from neonates to geriatrics. Non-trauma designated but certified for STEMI and stroke. Accepts first-time travelers and candidates with 1+ year ER experience who can demonstrate strong skills.
Responsibilities:
- Provide direct ER nursing care for a wide range of patient diagnoses
- Respond to medical emergencies and administer urgent interventions
- Interpret and manage dysrhythmias
- Perform phlebotomy, IV insertions, and central line care
- Use EPIC for charting (preferred)
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team (RT, PT, Radiology, Pharmacy, etc.)
- May float within the facility as needed
Certifications (Required):
- BLS – AHA
- ACLS – AHA
- PALS – AHA
- NIHSS
- CPI – Required for most units, "Calm Every Storm" online version only
Experience Requirements:
- Preferred: 2 years of ER experience
- Minimum: Will consider 1 year with strong skillset
- Travel Experience: Not required
- Community Hospital Experience: Required
- First-Time Travelers: Accepted
- Charting System: EPIC (preferred)

- Seizures, Sickle Cell, Respiratory infections, Poisoning
- Mental health crisis management, suicide precautions
- Near drowning, Epiglottitis, Spinal cord injuries
Cardiac/Respiratory:
- ABG interpretation, Vent management, Chest tubes, BiPAP/CPAP
- Emergency meds, IV sedation, Vasopressors, 12-lead EKGs
- Dysrhythmia management
Other Skills:
- Procedural sedation
- Central line care
- Blood product administration
- Orthopedic splinting
- CVA care
Scheduling & Floating:
- Self-scheduling
- Every other weekend required
- Floating: May float within scope
- Block scheduling: Not allowed
