Role:

Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) is a specialized branch of education designed to support young children, from birth through age five, who have developmental delays or disabilities. The primary goal of ECSE is to provide individualized, developmentally appropriate instruction and services that promote learning, communication, social-emotional development, physical growth, and independence during the critical early years of life.

Services are guided by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and are typically provided through an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) for children under age three, and an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for children ages three to five. ECSE emphasizes a family-centered approach, recognizing the essential role of families in a childs development, and often occurs in inclusive, natural settings such as homes, preschools, and community-based programs.

Education/Certification:

Bachelors degree from accredited university

Valid Virginia teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments ( Early Childhood )

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs
Effective communication skills

One year student teaching
