Position Summary Reporting directly to the Head of M&A, this position will play a pivotal role in all buy-side and sell-side activities. You'll collaborate closely with project development, asset management teams, and the underwriting team, contributing your knowledge in financial modeling, power point, and transactions.
The
Associate - M&A role will focus on supporting transactions for renewable power investment opportunities, new growth initiatives, and capital recycling initiatives. Our strategy is to leverage Deriva's competitive advantages, including geographical scale, local presence, access to large-scale capital and our operations-oriented approach, to acquire high-quality assets on a value basis. This position would be suitable for candidates who thrive in a performance-driven environment that emphasizes employee leadership and accountability for delivering results.
The role is based in Charlotte, N.C. Key Responsibilities Responsible for the execution and performance of various M&A activities, including, but not limited to:
- Building and managing financial models
- Participate in transaction execution, which includes due diligence of potential investments, identifying key investment merits and risks, meeting with management, reviewing transaction documentation, and working in conjunction with third-party consultants as required
- Conduct valuations of assets and companies in the renewable power space using various methods such as comparable company analysis, precedent transactions and Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) valuations
- Provide M&A analytical support through financial, technical, and contracts due diligence and project valuation and financial structuring, to evaluate potential project acquisitions, submit purchase offers, negotiate purchase agreements and close on acquisitions
- Supporting the origination, structuring, and execution of M&A transactions, for renewable energy projects across the various sectors such as solar, wind and battery storage, as well as other generating technologies.
- Preparing teaser decks and CIMs
- Perform industry research and evaluate new market segments and potential opportunities
- Analyzing trends in the renewable energy and energy markets at large
- Prepare Board and Strategy presentations used for investment decisions
- Complete other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Engineering, or a related field
- Five (5) or more of increasingly diverse or complex experience in addition to degree
Desired Qualifications - MBA in Finance or MSA in Accounting
- Experience in utility-scale renewable energy finance.
- 2 or more years of investment banking, valuation, private equity, applied mathematics, quantitative analytics experience or relevant coursework preferred
- Financial modeling, financial statement analysis, and accounting skills / knowledge preferred
- Expert proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent communication, project management and team-building skills experience working with cross- functional internal and external technical advisors and stakeholders
- Strong interpersonal skills with the desire to work in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment.
- CFA or CPA designation or be progressing towards CFA or CPA
- Experience with complex financial transactions and modeling
- Excellent presentation skills, both oral and written
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work in a flat organization, successfully leveraging the expertise of multiple colleagues in different lines of reporting
- Ability to multi-task and arbitrate between conflicting priorities
- Ability to take ownership over tasks and work proactively
- Working knowledge of power markets in North America
- Basic understanding of and/or ability to address concepts including, basis risk, power markets, hedging, losses, and congestion across markets
