Key Responsibilities & Qualifications
Required Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of recent inpatient adult psychiatry experience.
- Must be proficient in using an automatic medication dispensing system (Omni Cell).
- Must be proficient in electronic health records documentation, preferably Epic.
Required Skills:
- Psychiatric Care: Proficient in the use of psychotropic medications and their side effects.
- Clinical Skills: Competent in IV pumps, diabetic care, admissions, and discharges.
- Leadership: Able to assume the role of charge nurse.
Patient Population:
- Unit: 30-bed Adult Inpatient Psych unit.
- Patient Ratio: 1 RN to 7 or 8 patients.
- Patient Diagnoses: Anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and dual diagnosis (detox and mental health). Some medically acute patients with needs such as IVs, CPAPs, and wound care.
Licensure & Certifications:
- Required: Active Massachusetts RN License, AHA BLS, and a De-escalation certification.
- On-site Training: AVADE training and lead EKG training are offered on-site.
Additional Details
- Schedule: 36 hours per week, with a night-shift schedule and every other weekend (EOW) coverage required.
- Floating: Floating is required.
- Legal Knowledge: Knowledge of Massachusetts Department of Mental Health rules and regulations is highly valued, including patient rights related to restraint and seclusion, legal statuses, guardianship laws, and healthcare proxies.
Job Summary
We're looking for an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) for a night-shift position on our Adult Inpatient Psychiatry unit, Epstein 5, at Salem. This is a 30-bed unit that cares for patients ages 18-65 with a variety of mental health issues and some medical needs. The ideal candidate will be proficient in psychiatric nursing care, including medication management, and will be able to assume the charge nurse role when needed.
