Do Your Homework: Research That Sets You Apart
Master the Mission & Culture
Don't just read the "About Us" page. Look at their recent news, social media activity (especially LinkedIn, X/Twitter, and even TikTok/YouTube Shorts for a modern take), and press releases. Gen Z highly values purpose and authenticity, so understanding the company's "why" is crucial.
- The "Purpose" and "Values" page: Be ready to mention how their values align with your personal ethos. This is key for showing cultural fit.
- Employee Review Sites (Glassdoor/Reddit): Search for insights on the real-world culture, work-life balance, and growth opportunities. Gen Z prioritizes flexibility and a clear path for advancement.
- Financial Health: For public companies, skim the latest quarterly earnings report or 10-K to understand their market position, competitors, and recent challenges.
Know the Role Inside Out
Print the job description and highlight the top 3-5 required skills and responsibilities. These are your interview "target keywords."
- Prep the Proof: For every highlighted skill, have a quick, 2-sentence example of how you demonstrated that skill. These don't have to be from a formal job—use projects, coursework, a side hustle, or volunteer work.
- Speak Their Language: Use specific long-tail keywords from the job description when talking about your experience (e.g., if they mention "driving cross-functional collaboration," use that exact phrase).
- Tech-Savvy Application: Prepare to discuss not just the technical skills you have, but how you used technology to solve a problem. Highlight proficiency in modern tools like Asana, Slack, Miro, or even specific industry-related software.
